Life is what happens

It’s been two years since my first, excited post about my engagement to Matt. So much has happened since then. When I first dreamed up this blog I wanted it to be about how to plan things — perfectly. Insert head shake here. I know, I know… I’ve had a lot to learn these last few years.

John Lennon said;  “Life happens when you’re busy making other plans.” Yup, yup, yup — so true. The beautiful moments are often those that escape our careful planning, 20 point to-do lists and packed agendas. Even if you plan “perfectly” things will often take surprising turns. So, where does that leave a blog titled Permanently Planning?  To be honest, I’m still figuring that out. I wanted to come at this blog as an “expert” in life planning. But, truth be told, I’m learning as I go. I do believe creating a plan is an important starting point to reaching our goals. Planning is the beginning of action. You can’t get from point A to B if you don’t find a map, or some directions to get there. So, my goal here is to share how I’m drawing my maps, and how I’m inching toward my goals, and hopefully to help others as they create their own road map.

When I started this blog I was a gleeful girl, engaged and wedding planning. Today I’m a wife and a mother. What an amazing trip it’s been!

Look who’s planning!

zipline

Maui, 2010

I love this picture — it’s Matt and me one year ago on our dream vacation in Maui. We were just about to cross one more off our bucket list — zip lining.  Never mind that we were both terrified, we knew that the reward — a mile-long ride across a bamboo forest — would be well worth it. When we arrived at the other side (approximately thirty seconds later) we were both totally exhilarated, THRILLED – high-fives all around!

Now, one year later, I can’t remember one thing about that thirty second ride. What I do remember is the process it took to get there — the long bumpy bus ride to the zip line course, the first tentative “practice run” on a line that was only a few feet off the ground. And then, finally, the long climb to the top of the  highest platform.

When I look back my favorite memories are of the laughs we had gearing up in those awesome helmets and the pep-talks we gave each other when we wanted to turn back. My favorite memories are of the process.

Yup, what Emerson said is true — “Life is a journey, not a destination.”

Engaged!

So, here I am . It’s one year later  and I’m about to set off on the biggest journey of my life — marriage. But first, there’s a lot of planning to do…

This blog is all about the process — I’m excited to learn, to share, and to figure out how to plan for the next big adventure.
